Connection with Thiruvarur
Karunanidhi spent part of his youth and schooling in Thiruvarur, where he became active in student organizations and journalism. It was during this period that he started Manavar Nesan and laid the foundation for Murasoli, marking the beginning of his long career as a writer and journalist. While he is closely associated with Thiruvarur through his education and early public life, he was born in Thirukkuvalai, which is now part of Nagapattinam District, not Thiruvarur.
M. Karunanidhi was born into the Isai Vellalar community in Thirukkuvalai. From a young age, he showed a deep interest in Tamil literature, public speaking, and social reform. Although he did not pursue higher education, he became a respected scholar through self-learning and extensive reading.
In 1942, he founded Murasoli as a handwritten publication. It later became the official newspaper of the DMK and one of the most influential Tamil newspapers. Through editorials and articles, Karunanidhi promoted social justice, rationalism, and Tamil identity. He continued writing for Murasoli throughout much of his life.
